Exporting Tip: Double check your CUSMA compliance

So now that the news on Tariffs for Canada was announced straight from the Rose Garden by the US President Donald Trump, what are your next steps? Many have been commenting that in the large scheme of things for several industries we have swipe passed a major boulder. As always, keep your foot on the peddle and continue to stay abreast of the business news to know what changes if any are coming next. As a result of the new Tariffs announced on April 3, 2025, it would appear that most Canada-United-States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) designated goods and services remains in the clear. If you have been exporting to the United States for several years, one of the best things you can do is to make some quick steps to double check with your Licensed Customers Broker that all your paperwork is up to date. Being CUSMA compliant is imperative at this time during this upheaval of the global trade system. If you do not have a Customs Broker here is a full listing.

What does it mean to be CUSMA compliant? Apart from Aluminum and Steel, if you are exporting goods to the United States, as long as your production is done in North America and you meet the rules of origin requirements of CUSMA you would be exempt from Tariffs.

Some key resources to follow are those of your Provincial Governments, for example in New Brunswick, there is a dedicated resource page for all things Tariffs. Additionally the Federal Government have a full suite of great resources to diversify markets as well as direct supports for those directly impacted.

Remember folks, keep your head up and look for new ways to slowly start diversifying your markets. You can refer to my previous post which gives you some tips to tackle the domestic market.
